BLACK LIVES MATTER

As members of The Macondo Writers Workshop family we are deeply saddened and angry at the  murder of the many Black men, women, children, and transgender people at the hands of law enforcement and anti-Black racism, which is symptomatic of the historical and continuing mistreatment of Black people in the United States of America, and around the world. And, we affirm the Macondo Writing Workshop family stand together with Black Lives Matter. Systemic racism and white supremacist state violence must be dismantled and stopped. We stand firmly against the dehumanization and devaluing of Black life and the violence that such dehumanization perpetuates. We honor, remember, and commit to hold in our writings and in our actions, the memories of George Floyd (Minneapolis, MN/ Houston TX), Breonna Taylor (Louisville, KY), Tony McDade (Tallahassee, FL), Atatiana Jefferson (Fort Worth, TX), Tamir Rice (Cleveland, OH), Eric Garner (Staten Island, NY), Michael Brown (Ferguson, MO), Pamela Turner (Baytown, TX), Marquise Jones (San Antonio, TX), Michael Ramos (Austin, TX), Rayshard Brooks (Atlanta, GA), and every life destroyed by state-sanctioned violence and racism. We denounce the mass incarceration of protesters and denounce the abhorrent actions of the government officials that sanction such violence.
